Memorial Day weekend on the water with Saltwater Pony Tours

Memorial Day weekend brought some unpredictable weather to Chincoteague and Assateague Island, but once the rain cleared, the water came alive. What started as a cloudy afternoon quickly turned into an incredible two-hour ride through the back bays, and the southern herd of wild ponies did not disappoint.

Captain Henry was running the big boat while Captain Jake and Captain Spencer were both out on the water with private tours, making for a busy holiday weekend despite the weather.

From playful yearlings to bands grazing along the marsh, there was activity everywhere we looked. One of the best surprises of the day was seeing Beachboy move a little farther south to hang out with the younger group. It was honestly nice seeing him not so lonely out there, and even better knowing the yearlings now have someone to look up to.

The cooler weather had the wild ponies moving all afternoon, making for some unforgettable moments during one of our narrated tours around Assateague.

Even on a cloudy holiday weekend, our wildlife tours always find a way to surprise us. Between the scenery, the ponies, and the calm water after the rain passed, it felt like the perfect start to summer on the island.
