From the First Mate’s Seat: What a Day on Chincoteague’s Waters Really Looks Like

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to spend a day searching for wild ponies, dolphins, bald eagles, and hidden corners of Assateague, come aboard.

As the First Mate for Saltwater Pony Tours, I have the privilege of spending my days exploring the waters around Chincoteague Island and sharing some of the area’s most memorable Chincoteague Boat Tours and Wildlife Tours with our guests. No two trips are ever the same, and that’s one of the things I love most about being on the water.

Most mornings begin before the first guests arrive. The boat is prepared, cameras are ready, and there’s always a sense of excitement because you never know what wildlife might appear around the next bend. Some days we’re greeted by dolphins swimming alongside the boat. Other days a bald eagle soars overhead while osprey hunt in the marshes below.

Of course, the stars of the show are the wild ponies of Assateague.

One of my favorite moments is watching guests see the ponies for the very first time. For some, visiting Chincoteague and Assateague has been on their bucket list for years. Others are surprised to learn that these incredible animals spend their days grazing marsh grass, raising foals, and roaming freely across the island.

Every tour tells a different story.

Sometimes we find a stallion keeping watch over his band from the shoreline. Sometimes a mare and foal are quietly grazing in the distance. And sometimes the ponies decide to put on a show, splashing through the water or wandering close enough for unforgettable photographs.

Whether you’re joining one of our Wild Pony Tours or simply hoping to experience the beauty of Virginia’s Eastern Shore, the view from the water offers something special. Away from the crowds, guests get a unique perspective of Assateague’s wildlife, marshes, and natural beauty that many visitors never experience from land.

Another thing I love about these tours is seeing people slow down. Life moves fast, but out on the water, something changes. The sound of the waves, the salt air, and the peaceful scenery seem to help everyone relax and take in the moment.

Many guests return year after year because every trip is different. Wildlife moves, seasons change, and the ponies always keep us guessing. Some visitors prefer our daytime Wildlife Tours, while others fall in love with the peaceful beauty of a Sunset Cruise as the sun settles over the marshes surrounding Assateague.

At the end of each trip, guests leave with photos, memories, and stories they’ll share long after their vacation ends. That’s what Saltwater Pony Tours is all about, creating unforgettable experiences while sharing the incredible wildlife and history that make this area so special.
