What Is the Chincoteague Pony Swim?
The Chincoteague Pony Swim is an annual tradition organized by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company. Each year, the Saltwater Cowboys guide the southern herd of wild Chincoteague ponies across the Assateague Channel from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island.
The event is about much more than the swim itself. The annual Pony Auction helps support the care and management of the herd while preserving this incredible tradition for future generations.

Pony Swim Week Schedule
Sunday – Southern Herd Roundup
Pony Swim Week officially begins when the Saltwater Cowboys round up the southern herd and move the ponies into the corrals along Beach Road on Assateague Island.
This is your first opportunity to see the southern herd gathered together before Wednesday’s swim.

The Saltwater Cowboys begin guiding the wild Chincoteague ponies during the world-famous Chincoteague Pony Swim.
Monday – Northern Herd Beach Walk at Sunrise
One of the week’s most memorable events takes place early Monday morning at sunrise with the Northern Herd Beach Walk.
Visitors gather before dawn on Assateague Island to watch the northern herd move along the beach as the sun rises over the Atlantic Ocean. The golden light, ocean backdrop, and wild ponies make this one of Pony Swim Week’s favorite events for photographers and nature lovers.
The southern herd also remains in the corrals along Beach Road throughout the day.
Tuesday – Veterinary Inspection
Tuesday is Veterinary Inspection Day.
Each pony receives a health check before Wednesday’s swim to ensure every animal is healthy and ready for the crossing.
The southern herd remains in the corrals, giving visitors another opportunity to see the ponies up close before the swim.
Wednesday – Pony Swim Day
This is the event everyone has been waiting for.
Thousands of spectators gather along the shoreline to watch the Saltwater Cowboys guide the southern herd across the Assateague Channel.
After the famous swim, the ponies make their traditional walk through downtown Chincoteague before arriving at the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company Carnival Grounds, where visitors can continue to see them throughout the day.

After the Pony Swim, the Saltwater Cowboys guide the wild Chincoteague ponies through town on their way to the carnival grounds.
Thursday – Pony Auction
Thursday features the world-famous Pony Auction.
Selected foals are auctioned to help support the care and management of the herd through the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.
The southern herd remains at the carnival grounds, giving visitors another opportunity to see the ponies while enjoying the festivities.
Friday – Return Swim
On Friday, the Saltwater Cowboys guide the southern herd back across the channel to Assateague Island.
Once they return, the ponies resume their normal lives roaming freely across the marshes, creeks, and shorelines until next year’s Pony Swim.

Can You See the Ponies by Boat During Pony Swim Week?
This is one of the questions we’re asked most often.
The answer is no.
Beginning on Sunday, the southern herd is moved into the corrals on Assateague Island in preparation for Pony Swim. Because the ponies are no longer roaming freely through the marshes, they are not viewable from our boat tours during Pony Swim Week.
If you’re hoping to see the southern herd during the week, visit the corrals on Assateague Island from Sunday through Tuesday, or the carnival grounds on Chincoteague after Wednesday’s swim.
If your goal is to experience the ponies in their natural habitat from the water, we recommend visiting before the Sunday roundup or after the Return Swim on Friday. That’s when the ponies are once again free to roam Assateague Island, and our tours offer excellent opportunities to see them alongside bottlenose dolphins, bald eagles, osprey, pelicans, shorebirds, and the beautiful marshes that make this island so special.
